Minerals are separated from each other by various methods based on their different physical, chemical or physicochemical properties through the process of beneficiation. Magneticite and quartz, for example, are two of the main minerals found in Anshan type iron ore. Minerals' physical properties, such as magnetism, density, and conductivity, differ from their chemical and physical properties, such as wettability of their surfaces. Beneficiation is the process of separating them with medium or reagent so that one product contains mainly magnetite while the other contains mainly quartz.
Beneficiation aims to:
1. Increase the amount of useful minerals. By beneficiating lean iron ore and adding about 30% iron, the concentrate can be obtained, and the useful mineral magnetite is enriched.
2. Dissociate the useful mineral components. Coexisting sulfides of copper, lead, and zinc are examples. Following beneficiation, they can be separated into copper concentrate, lead concentrate, and zinc concentrate.
3. Decontaminate raw materials. Some or most of the harmful impurities sulfur and phosphorus in iron concentrate can be removed by beneficiation, and the amount of iron and titanium minerals in kaolin that affect its whiteness can be reduced by beneficiation to meet required standards.
Several factors contribute to the significance of mineral beneficiation: in terms of technology, the development of science, technology, and industry have raised the quality requirements of mineral raw materials. Ore that is directly mined does not often meet the standard, while raw ore that has been beneficiated and processed can meet the requirements.
