For highly oxidized low grade gold ore, the cost-effective way to recover the gold in short time we use heap leaching, heap leaching is a widely used hydrometallurgical method for extracting gold, the simple process is stockpiling→leaching→carbon absorbtion→smelting, the flowsheet is as below:

1.Crushing ore to an appropriate size (not too fine, usually 20–50 mm).
2.Building a heap (pile) of ore on a lined pad to prevent contamination.
3.Spraying or percolating a leaching solution over the heap.
4.Collecting the metal-bearing solution (pregnant solution) at the base.
5.Recovering the metal from the solution, usually via adsorption, precipitation, or electro-winning.

Step 1: Prepare the base pad
Usually compact soil or concrete lined with impermeable geomembrane.
Drainage channels are installed to collect leachate.
Step 2: Layer the ore
Place the crushed ore in lifts/layers.
Typical layer thickness: 1–2 meters per lift.
Each layer is slightly compacted and leveled.
Step 3: Build the total heap
Heaps can range in height depending on material and leaching efficiency:
Gold heap leaching: 10–20 meters is common.
Steeper heaps may be unstable; a gentle slope (~30°) is safer.
Step 4: Install irrigation system
Drip or sprinkler system on top of the heap.
Ensures leaching solution percolates evenly through the pile.
